JASON LESCALLEET The Pilgrim PIC DISC LP + CD $55
November 2006 release on jason lescalleet‚s own „glistening examples‰ imprint.
„the pilgrim‰ has been an on-going project of jason‚s since his father‚s passing in 2005; that it has come to fruition as such a lavish edition (a full-color gatefold lp sleeve housing a full-color picture disc lp and... nestled deep within the „sealed‰ pocket of said gatefold, a full color 7‰ x 10‰ 8-page booklet with a 74-minute compact disc tucked inside) says everything about jason‚s drive to celebrate his father‚s life.
The record-event of the year, hands down, rife with a real emotional heft lacking in so much of the experimental music that grazes my desk these days. i give it my highest recommendation. - Mimaroglu Music Sales
BERNARD PARMEGIANI Chants Magnetiques CD $35
"Here is a masterpiece of electronic music! French musician Bernard Parmegiani - see his biography in the previous CD release on Fractal "Jazzex" Fractal 028 - has composed Chants Magnetiques in 1974, one of the most sough after Bernard Parmegiani‚s album - a monster rarity which is almost impossible to find. This obscure album was composed around the same time as De Natura Sonorum during the mid-seventies, a particularly important and effervescent era for Bernard Parmegiani. Indeed, as if one can say that De Natura Sonorum is one of the best Parmegiani‚s "serious" works in terms of technics-sound-harmonic-tone, then there is no doubt that Chants Magnetiques is his chef-d‚?uvre on his "dark side", the "Parmegiani‚s hidden face" that few peoples knows nowadays.
CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE Godbear / Jamaica Heinekens in Brooklyn 2CD $50
"Originally released on the Barooni label and sold out since a long time. Charlemagne Palestine and Alga Marghen have decided to make the two CDs available in a new 2CD set edition. The CDs are a new print of the original ones, both included in a newly designed slipcase. Godbear. Flying. In the stratosphere of the overtones. Turn out the lights. Close your eyes. Trance out. Into SONORAMAGNIFICATALAND. Pushed by Remy Martin cognac, the piano would replay the encoded performances exactly in three parts. 'Strumming'. 'Lower Depths'. 'Timbral Assault'. A re-evaluation of work from the seventies, recorded in the eighties, released in the late nineties and available on CP Records now. A long fuckin' journey, don't cha think? Nuf said! Jamaica Heinekens in Brooklyn. Charlemagne Palestine recordings on the 5th of September 1997, on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, of the Jamaica Day Parade. With a small Sony DAT player and a small stereo microphone, Palestine walked throughout the festival very slowly for several hours to let the ambient sounds of each block naturally change in real time. The 60+ minutes segment on this record is played without any editing. Superimposed upon this extract Palestine has composed three series of drone textures for Yamaha organs, 16 Serge & Rubery oscillators with bandpass filtering, and a thick Arp Synthesizer texture using oscillators, filters and other sound modulation devices. All together this work creates a dialogue between pure and mixed electronics and the real-time ambient sounds of a traditional urban ethnographic popular festival. Edition of 500 copies."
ANDERS DAHL Hundloka, flockblomstriga 1 CD $30
This is Sweden-based Anders Dahl's first release on the Häpna label. From documentary audio recordings of his travels to India, electronic manipulations of toxic ooze, to "wildlife" recordings of digital birds, Dahl goes places where the natural and the digital world meet and obfuscate one another. Using steel bowls, bouzoukis, bottles, pans, drums, guitars, electronics, and anything else on hand or in his surroundings, Anders Dahl, much like his esteemed botanist compatriot of the same name, seeks to minutely observe, identify, and record even the smallest environmental event. Hundloka (cow parsley) is a common meadow flower; a weed whose distribution is restricted with great difficulty. Hundloka is also the name of three pieces of music which, in similarity to their namesake, grow in areas between the wild and the cultivated, 'twixt nightly woods and lit up cities. Hundloka is the music of the late afternoon, a catnap of civilization where waking and dreaming can hardly be distinguished from each other.
ANGELO PATERONELLA Sintesi da un Diario CD $35
Angelo Petronella has been working as a composer and sound artist for many years, and has developed a very personal vision on the narrative qualities of acousmatics, which he pursue with millimetric precison and obsessive passion. in „sintesi da un diario‰ (abstract from a diary), he has created a rich and complex soundscape made of distant and future memories, imaginary places and countless possibile stories.
Christa Pfangen Watch me getting back to the end CD $35
"Christa Pfangen are Andrea Belfi and Mattia Coletti. The name is an homage to Nico, although the music has obviously no relation with the icon of the New York avant garde scene. They belong to the new electroacoustic/improv/avant-rock scene which is taking shape in Italy and includes such names as 3/4 Had Been Eliminated, Valerio Tricoli, Å, Stefano Pilia and others. Working with percussion, treated guitar and an array of different objects and noises, they have given birth to a dynamic work of great beauty and reverberating rhythms, oscillating between avant-folk and electroacoustic music."
GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA ANIONI st 2CD + DVD BOX $80
Final re-stock of one of last years most essential releases. "This deluxe boxed edition presents some of the most compelling improvisations of this extraordinary improv group active in the 60s and featuring such names as Ennio Morricone, Ivan Vandor, Roland Kayn, Franco Evangelisti, Walter Branchi, Mario Bertoncini and John Heineman. Spanning from free-jazz to total abstract noise and wild electronic sounds, these pieces were recorded between 1967 and 1969 are released here for the first time. The enclosed video DVD, shot in a stunning black and white, is a unique document that captures the rehearsal of the thrilling concert that the group gave in Rome in 1967. It features both english and Italian subtitles. The cloth-covered box contains three individual digipak, a 72-pages italian-english booklet and a poster. Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi".

Peter Watkins
If you have not seen the films of Peter Watkins this may seem a bit odd by way of inclusion on the syn site. If you have, well maybe, just maybe, it makes total sense.
"This Canada-based Web site, in two parts, contains the text of Peter Watkins' latest critical media statement (from 2000), along with detailed information regarding each of PW's films and their current availability".
One of the most forgotten (weird saying this when he is alive and active) and important voices in the entire canon of cinema.

OREN AMBARCHI (LP)
Oren Ambarchi's stacte motors, is the most recent addition to the western vinyl portrait series. these pieces continue the stacte series started in 1998 with ambarchi's first self-released solo recordings. similar to the 4 previous editions of the series, which explored one idea at length, stacte motors is an experiment in exciting instruments with a spinning motor with strings attached. the resulting recordings are metallic walls of minimalist drones, both fearless and dreamy.
Produced and recorded at bjb studios in australia, these one-take acoustic recordings have a very tactile and physical presence. you hear the collision of the motor-driven strings and the instruments as they produce overtone-drenched vibrations that define an aural space, simultaniously peaceful and aggressive.
Side a "cymbal motor" resounds with deeper than deep sub bass frequencies pelted by metallic shimmers. the piece is reminiscent of harry bertoia's dark, drifting sonambient sound sculptures, but more menacing and with more depth. like a more rockin' and unrelenting terry riley piece, "guitar motor" is a raw but dreamy soundscape. with its dense vibrating strings, it also calls to mind the beautiful drones ellen fullman creates with her long string instrument.
both pieces swell with lush overtones and the flickering impact of motor-driven strings and instrument, creating a slowly shifting and disorienting acoustic world. like the earlier stacte releases, each piece on stacte motor is meaty enough let you sink your teeth in and enjoy.

JASON LESCALLEET (PIC DISC LP + CD)
November 2006 release on jason lescalleet’s own “glistening examples” imprint.
“the pilgrim” has been an on-going project of jason’s since his father’s passing in 2005; that it has come to fruition as such a lavish edition (a full-color gatefold lp sleeve housing a full-color picture disc lp and... nestled deep within the “sealed” pocket of said gatefold, a full color 7” x 10” 8-page booklet with a 74-minute compact disc tucked inside) says everything about jason’s drive to celebrate his father’s life.
Starting with his performance at the intransitive festival of electronic music (side 1 of the lp), jason began constructing a series of pieces based around his father’s interpretation of the hudak/lescalleet “figure 2” release as corrupted wind chimes and/or the sounds emanating from the floor of a ‘32 chevy... and in fact the latter sentiment captures the essence of this piece; low-end rumble made “rickety” by the combination of its tape-wow/flutter origins & the faint crackle of the lp-surface.
The next piece (side 2 of the lp) is an un-airbrushed field-recording of jason’s final exchange with his father, then lying on his death bed. given the context on first listen i could barely get through it (too much resonance with my own unchecked emotions on the loss of my mother a few years back) but on subsequent listens i can now appreciate it as one of the most intense listening experiences i’ve ever encountered, rendering many “audio documentary” style recordings powerless in comparison.
Finally, the cd contains a single extended-length piece of immaculate low-end clusters and ripples; starting with the aforementioned corrupted wind chimes and continuing on a flowing, linear path through a frenzied climax of pure rage - before we’re again in the hospital, listening to jason’s daughter audrey singing “molly malone” over the faint backing of muted bells. just glorious.
Where the live recording is all about re-capturing a hazy, time-worn memory (jason and/or his father as children), the piece on the cd is crystal-clear, assembled with the benefits of modern sound-assembling apparatus and a remarkably keen sense of frequency-relationships (jason and/or his father as adults) - when i first played this piece (at a more-than-fair clip) every single un-bolted appliance in my house was vibrating in resonance...
This set, in my mind, is the crowning achievment of jason’s musical life-on-earth thusfar; he’s managed to channel the infinite sadness of his father’s passing into a grand statement that’s both intensely personal and penultimately triumphant.
The record-event of the year, hands down, rife with a real emotional heft lacking in so much of the experimental music that grazes my desk these days. i give it my highest recommendation. - Mimaroglu Music Sales

BERNARD PARMEGIANI (CD)

A collection of 10 united tracks under the title album name Chants Magnetiques/Magnetic Fields - titled before Jean Michel Jarre’s album - and musically, in summary, more experimental, more organic, more spacey in compare to his famous Ina-Grm works. This reissue on CD for the first time will rejoice all music lovers from Edgar Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Tod Dokstader to Musica Elletronica Viva, Nurse With Wound, Organum, Conrad Schnitzler. Official remastered edition from the original master tapes with the original cover sleeve." - Fractal.

KODE 9 featuring spaceape (CD)
After months of waiting for a local distributor to get copies of this cd (which has been out for 6 mths or so) we finally get copies at a stoopid expensive price this week. Ho Hum.... Anyway for those that have read the freakin Wire end of year list and thought they should check out this 'burial' record - well forget it! This is a far superior release.... fully formed, less derivative whilst still bveing as dark as a london winter or at least the mental state of the humans that dwell in such conditions. Fact 1 - Kode 9 can write tunes, really good tunes. Fact 2 - this is prime paranoid party production Fact 3 - One of the more interesting beat orientated cd's in recent years. Fact 4 Mr 9 is doing his thesis in subsonic audio as used in warfare. Fact 5 We recommend this cd. Yes we do. In fact along with Scott Walker's "The Drift" and 3/4 had been eliminated's "A year of the aural gauge operation"
this would rank as one of our favourite records of 2006. nice. (for the record our fave release this year by far is The Trees Community "plays the Christ Tree" which all should hunt to obtain as we missed out on copies here.

Watch me getting back to the end
Christa Pfangen (CD)

YANNICK DAUBY (3"CDR)
"Yannick Dauby is a french composer, known for his collaborations with alio die ("descendre cinq voiles à l'ombre d'une voile" cdsingle on amplexus), mnortham (the "entrelacs" project) or thomas köner (the recent "zyklop" 2cd set on mille plateaux). this 3" is a re-release of a piece yannick dauby self-released in 1999, now accompanied by a new piece. deep concrete ambient music...
"sounding sands are found in many places in the whole world. this rare natural phenomenon, is represented most of the time by beaches, whose sand is squeaking when it is struck or pushed. however, in some deserts, we meet some large dunes which have a more astonishing activity. sand avalanches, mostly provocated by the wind, create very deep sounds, extremely powerful, accompanied by tremors and lasting for several minutes. unexplained, these singings from the desert are despicted like roarings, voices from surnatural beings or the rumbling of the thunder." JOE COLLEY (3CD)
"I grew up with the sound of bees, my father was an amateur beekeeper. It is an amazingly complex but also simple sound, full of warmth, comfort, but also menace-the drone of many tiny legs and wings. My father's hives were wiped out by a virus before I could make a recording, but I found someone willing to let me visit them in the hills of California. I made recordings from the outside and inside, embedding microphones among the active bees and positioning them at the entrances to the hives.
It took me some years to arrive at an idea of how to use this material in a respectful way. The sound itself is so beautiful in it's monotony. I could listen to it forever. But i took it as a challenge to examine my relationship to this sound, to view it from several angles including raw unprocessed recordings as well as playback through cymbals and analog synthesizer. I hope somehow it shows my perception of the overlap between our current electronic reality and one of the most elemental sounds on earth". (joe colley)

M.NORTHAM (3CD)
Based on various sources including spring cars themselves recorded at the Terre Haute Raceway September of 2005. This work is a monolithic testament of the force of life of a man who lived it fully until the end. As well, a meditation on the samasaric metaphor of the oval track—the circle of life we are all riding along and are bound to GO.

N.A.D.M.A (CD)
"N.A.D.M.A. was officially born between August and the beginning of September 1972 during the time spent in a little village in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The identity and musical orientation of the collective centered on the convergence of heterogeneous interests and sensibilities coming from avant-garde jazz experiences liberated by post-free currents, from classical studies, or from musicians also active as visual artists, who had cultivated an instrumental practice utilising spontaneous expression. All the group members assimilated and creatively incorporated the most progressive influences of Afro-American music and the contemporary neo-avant-garde, but shifted noticeably in the direction of the contemplative and ecstatic vitality of non-European, especially African, musical cultures. The Natural Arkestra Da Maya Alta was, and still is, known to a limited group of devoted listeners on the merits of the only record released by RCA in 1973. The group, which represented one of the most innovative entities among the collectives of improvisers active in those years, perfectly expressed its musical virtues in a limited number of periodic live events. The concerts took place mostly in Milan during 1973-74. The CD starting this series, Paura, is named after the first track of the N.A.D.M.A. concert at Circolo Lepetit in Milan in March 1973, presented here in its entirety. In this concert, the very first live concert preserved on tape, N.A.D.M.A. already performs a well-established repertoire, integrating and expanding upon the material of the RCA LP. Davide Mosconi himself documents the aesthetic and existential horizons of N.A.D.M.A. in a typed text and handwritten notes presented here, which also include biographical data about all members of the group. The 16-page booklet also includes an essay by Gabriele Bonomo as well as original documents and photos."

PRURIENT (CD)
"As the dust settles and your tinnitus roars back to life, you wonder about Prurient. Last ear blast on Load, Black Vase went for the jugular from the git go with sporadic percussion and piercing square toned filthy noise. Just the thing for a rough day during a U.S.-sponsored war. This time out, Pleasure Ground oozes with a new shade of grey from the crayon set. A new dark waved sensibility takes hold. The seconds after a corpse appears on a riverbank, and the 'what the fuck am I gonna do' slips from your lips, the Valhalla horn of Prurient trumpets! This takes the difference between a noise record and symphonic doom and splits the difference. Brutality has a new form as it mows down school cafeterias full of trench-coated losers to a headphone soundtrack of deadly church organ/orgasm."

BERNARD PARMEGIANI (CD)
2006 release, presenting 3 versions of "Plain-Temps". Classic new work from the most important INA GRM composer. The first part of the suite, "Le Present Compose" is from 1991, recorded here in 2006. "The second part is "Entre-Temps" from 1992. "The gradual slowing down of the tick-tock sound of a penduluum with which the this piece opens provides us with not only the most symbolic but also the most illusory image of the passing of time. This is followed by by a constantly changing continuum, apparently homogenous and harmonious yet ultimately fragile. In the ever wider intervals that open up between these carefully-timed happenings, soundscapes appear. These resemble certain image-memories of everyday events, some close, some distant." -- Parmegiani. Part three is "Plain Temps", from 1993, recorded in 2006.

DAVID DANIELL (CD)
HAVE YOU HEARD the raw, minimal howl that rises from the late-night, backwoods campfires at Table of the Elements? If so, you know the work of David Daniell — even if you don't yet recognize the name. Daniell is the head of both of composer Rhys Chatham's current ensembles; he's the lead guitarist in Jonathan Kane's rollicking band, February; he performs regularly in a duo with Tortoise's Doug McCombs; he has collaborated with a Who's Who of today's finest, including Tim Barnes, Thurston Moore and Loren Connors; and his guitar work with his own band, San Agustin, is the stuff of which fleeting blues-drone dreams are made. Following a long break after his debut solo release, Daniell now returns with Coastal. In all its variety, this record is a focused synthesis of influences. Tracks like "Sunfish" and "Glasswort" use acoustic guitar reminiscent of work by David Grubbs and Mountains, while the thick psychedelic morass of deep electric guitar, synth drone and scattered tribal percussion of "Whelk" brings to mind early Faust, and the long-form tone poem "Palmetto" is pure swirling electronic glacial beauty. Rooted in the blues, American minimalism and post-punk ideologies, Daniell's guitar playing is always inspired; when fused with his intricate electroacoustic compositions, the results are breathtaking.

DEADNOTES (CDR)
Busby/Carchesio/Craig kick out 18 fractured circus tunes and 1 death funk jam with barely a breath taken. Trained in the school of error and coursing with electric energy - instantly hummable miniatures for post-punk moondogs.
“Fabulously jerky bursts of jagged guitar, drums and trumpet - imagine if Maher Shalal Hash Baz tried to make mariachi music with only half their band members. Other tracks recall Morricone in miniature. Rough and utterly great - actually, post-punk mariachi ain't a bad idea!” – Gayle Brogan, Melody Bar

AUX ASSEMBLY (CDR)
Five apparitions, five hazy hallucinations borne from considered gesture and calm contemplation. Even Cowgirls Get Dementia is the debut release from duo Aux Assembly - Elise Bishop (On, Badcopbadcop) and Dimitra (Archaic Forms). This gathering of phantoms meanders in, quietly rearranging the furniture until a moment of recognition, followed by mesmeric observation. Although primarily a tranquil affair, the tempest associated with the previous output of these artists is given some opportunity for release, creeping up slowly in the ascending drone of ‘Accordion Madness’ and crashing down in the the concluding feedback squalls of ‘Battlesub Galactica’.

JOSEPHINE FOSTER (LP)
"Over the course of just a few years, Josephine Foster has captivated audiences & critics alike through a magnetic patchwork of recordings ranging from broken spirited balladry (Born Heller), fiery psych rock gestalt (All The Leaves Are Gone) to the voice of an outsider folk siren (Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You). The two constants are the utterly overwhelming strength and seductive unease of her voice & the bravery of her iconoclastic spirit. For anyone else, what lies inside her latest offering, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, might be a freakish turn but for Josephine Foster this is a grand part of a continual movement. And so it goes, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is a deeply absorbing, magical reconstruction of 19th century miniature German art song -- the intimate sibling to operatic arias customarily performed in the parlor. The album floats in a wash of blissed out voice and electric guitar in an almost dreamlike fashion through a salon of her own invention. In a music where sacred cows roam the pastures a plenty, Foster pays tribute -- on her own terms -- and in the process makes a case for German as a new found romance language."
