DEFENDERS OF THE AXE #2
Tuesday August 1st
DEFENDERS OF THE AXE #2
Presented by Dreamland Recordings.
Doors 8:00pm
An exploration of local guitar sounds.
Featuring:
Chris Smith
http://www.myspace.com/circlenonelp <http://www.myspace.com/circlenonelp>
Chris Smith has been exploring a sad, frozen world inside his guitar for some years now. Since helping to invent the "solo rock guitar based sound art" genre in the 90s, and releasing a number of albums to critical acclaim on Australian and international labels, Chris has increasingly incorporated found sounds & field recordings in his semi-improvised constructions.
Seth Rees
http://www.myspace.com/sethrees <http://www.myspace.com/sethrees>
Seth Rees is an atmospheric soundscape guitarist /film scorer/producer/ from New Zealand, now living in Melbourne. Seth's sound is both original & tantalising, comprising of wide ranging delicately layered harmonies, cyclical engaging melodies & hypnotic rhythms. Seth doesnt fall into the trap of letting the effects make the music, the sound itself is still relatively pure, as much as is possible for an electric guitar anyway.
Barnaby Oliver
http://www.untitledstates.net
Since completing postgraduate studies at London's Royal College of Music, Barnaby Oliver has been involved in a bewildering range of projects, ranging from chamber orchestra arrangements of Hendrix & the Velvet Underground to a BBC TV mini opera exploring Elvis Presley's Welsh ancestry. As a member of UK alt-rock band Venus Ray <http://www.venusray.com/> he worked alongside Tony Thewlis of Australian garage rock legends The Scientists, & with UK artist Simon Whitehead ( www.untitledstates.net <http://www.untitledstates.net/> ) he has explored the outer limits of sound & space.
Winterville
http://www.myspace.com/wintervillemusic <http://www.myspace.com/wintervillemusic>
http://www.winterville.cjb.net <http://www.winterville.cjb.net/>
Marcus Skinner blurs avantgarde instrumental soundscapes with field recordings & baritone guitar. Winterville holds its footing in the subtle union of potentially polemic sounds. Warm textural dynamics fuse with an oblique spaciousness, while gentle ellipses & motifs of baritone guitar swell, before gradually petering out into darkness.
