Free Kagel film downloads
The good folks at ubu.com have made available a selection of films made by the most curious composer Mauricio Kagel.... essential viewing in our books!
"The Films of Maurico Kagel ). Whether in the classical music hall, the theatrical stage or film/video, Kagel's neo-dada performances and wickedly original techniques always one's eyes and ears to the pure possibilities of sounds and their production. Although this aspect of his varied productions is little known in the US, Kagel's output as a filmmaker is tremendous. He just about made a film or video each year in the 60s and 70s, and has only begun to slow down in recent times. Films include "Antithese" (1965), "Match" (1966), "Solo" (1967), "Duo" (1967-68), "Hallelujah" (1969), "Ludwig Van" (1969), "Blue's Blue" (1981) and "MM51 / Nosferatu" (1983)".

Melbourne, Australia DIY Modular Synth Builders unite!
Message from synth obsessed Ross Healy:
"Modular Synths cost way too much for Australians to import (I know I just bought a 5 panel Serge Modular Synth!) so kits seem to be the best option, but for a noobie to solder and build here is an idea...
This idea came from *Serge Tcherepnin and the 60's spirit.
I have a classroom in the centre of town that we could use on 1 Saturday a month to get together and build modular kits. We would all buy the same board and parts ( say of a Ken Stone - Low Pass Filter) and
build it all on the same day, this would enable people with no knowledge to be next to people with knowledge and in the process have fun.
I am collecting names of people who are interested, I am hoping to get 10 - 15 people max interested. I already have 5 people, all you need to do is get involved in the spirit ..., pay nothing except for the Board, parts, and your own solder etc. and come along..
If you are interested please be quick about it as we start 1 July and meet every month to build Contact Ross Healy healyr and I will start to get the ball rolling."

PAUL LABRECQUE VALERIE WEBB (LP)
"Cold nights roll in during the early parts of spring, reminding us that we're not quite out of the woods yet; there is still work to be done. The contrast of warm, sun-filled days and nights where you can still see your breath is a microcosm for what we all consistently feel in our lives. It's the temporary gratification and beauty that keeps us hopeful, but the desolate darkness that keeps us honest. Valerie Webb and Paul Lebrecque offer up ten meditations on this consciousness divided. 'Trees, Chants, & Hollers' is a magical ride through thick and thin. It's the culmination of knowing that in order to reach the place you long for, you have to do the dirty work first. Webb's angelic voice lifts the spirits of the record, offering a delicate balance to some of the more workmanlike music. These two forces work as a brilliant partnership as a banjo that finds itself high in the leaves of majestic oaks, searching for the haunted flute squeals that float overhead. This is a beautiful, dense album in so many ways; it offers up something new with every listen.” Originally self-released in a deluxe edition of 100 copies.

DEAD MACHINES (LP)
The A side was recorded at the first No Fun Festival in March 2004 (Brooklyn) and features a little comedy to start with and then things get heavy. The second side is the very first VG Kids/Wolf Den Ypsi Street Level throwdown. The band’s set was performed live on a 6-color shirt screen press with a seven speaker set up on the press heads, which when spun slightly made for a dead-universe dying electronic creeping blast sound. NATE brought a fog machine that blasted out the room and into the parking lot of the VG complex. Near the end of the recording you can hear people chuckling over the absurdity of it all. Printed sleeves with the back cover featuring a demented JOHN OLSON collage.

JOSEPHINE FOSTER AND THE SUPPOSED (LP)
After a 180-degree shift in style only, Josephine Foster & the Supposed offer up a twelve-cut blow out that's exuberant and hard hitting. On All The Leaves Are Gone, Josephine embraces her rock and roll heart and intuitively summons up the mojo of legendary songstress Patti Smith as she rides the crest of a fluid and angular rhythm section that's as triumphant as the sound of classic Television and trebly West Coast psychedelia from decades gone by. Lyrically, stylistically and musically, this is a fearless, soon to be classic post-punk rock and roll record that delivers the goods from start to finish. All The Leaves Are Gone was originally dreamed up as a rock opera. Before visions of Jesus Christ Superstar start dancing in your head, play this record--just for a minute--and you'll know there is something happening here that's unlike anything else you've ever heard."

An intense double-LP survey of PELT geography around the turn of the century, compiling live recordings the band issued on CDRs in tiny editions or on comps plus some unreleased material. Combines the most all-out electric attacks Pelt's ever deigned to release, plus some of the growling drone float that preceded/coincided with the band's jump into acoustic material. Off the hook gatefold packaging that maybe offers hints of sources, etc. This double-vinyl set is sure to blow some minds--especially those who have come to know Pelt in the past 2-3 years. These early recordings ) are heavy and sure to please those who have been waiting patiently for this. The packaging is incredible, too--with beautiful artwork and a very sturdy gatefold sleeve.

WOLF EYES (12")
New single - 2 tracks. "Driller" is taken from forthcoming full length proper "Human Animal" and takes the form of menacing electronic atmosphere's which explodes halfway to a punk noise song beast. "Psychogeist" sticks to the urban creep with a repetitive keyboard line gently flayed by electronic squal and distance metal. Comes wrapped in a totally great "psychedelic death" collage sleeve which in our opinion is worth the price of entry along. Stick it on your wall and watch your friends crawl.

UNAUSTRALIANS (LP)
Taking their name from Meat & Livestock Australia propaganda the Melbourne based duo of Ein and Aus transgress a spiritual reality in which grindcore is subverted towards a path of procratinat-obliteration. 46 cranial fracturing songs featuring wailing banshee vocals, a drum machine set to over 300bpm and a possesed 20th century shredder guitarist. On stage, the couple use chainsaws, exploding corpses, and other visual devices to communicate their ideas about domestic violence and civil disobedience. UnAustralians truly represent the extremely brutal end of improvised music in Australia.
Limited edition of 300 on clear red vinyl. Comes with a bonus DVD of live performances.

ANTIPAN (LP)
The Sydney quartet of Anthony Guerra, Matt Earle, Sumugan Sivanesan and Nick Dan summon the evil spirits in this documented live ritual that runs the gamut from Neu! metal pummel to sinecore minimalism. The world seems to collapse as the goddess soma brings white light that strips any tangible object of meaning. Echoing mantras of dark energy channelled outwardly via an omnidirectional spill of force fed feedback.
Limited edition of 275 on one sided hot pink vinyl with etching by Rizili. Includes insert print on thick pink card with individually hand numbered silk screened pink on black covers. The record itself plays from the middle of the LP out - can one fit more love into one record? We think not.

Simply put this is one of the most impressive releases we have encountered this year. The concept (like all great concepts) is incredibly simple. 2 folks playing all kinds of instruments in various modes (melancholic 'tunes', baily-esque tinkering, minmal electronic drones etc..) in a 'backyard' recording studio. As a result the sounds of the environment become an intergral part of each finished piece. Sometimes as a textural background, occasionally punctuating the actual music being played as some kind of spontaneous 3rd member of the group. It's a fantastic idea and works equally as well as a concept and as a rich listening experience. I can't say enough good things about this release - but don't just listen to me - the following write up is from Brad Rose from Foxy Digitalis who is equally as impressed by this cd:
"I will sing the praises of the Kindling label to anyone who will listen. So now that I've got your attention... "Leaves" is very limited CD-R release from Kindling kingpin, Leighton Craig, and his partner-in-crime, Eugene Carchesio. These two artists have been doing some of the most interesting solo work in Brisbane for some time. Craig is also a member of the magnificent group, The Lost Domain. On "Leaves," we find the duo taking their act outside and exploring new methods of interacting with the ambience of nature. Over the course of 34 minutes, Craig & Carchesio create a solemn atmosphere that will relax your mind and soothe your nerves. These 11 tracks are brilliant. Cicadas chirp alongside recorder whirls and banjo plucks. Many of these pieces are minimalist in approach and execution, but that does not mean there is little happening. It shows how well these two understand that when you're playing with Mother Nature as the third member of your group, sometimes you need to just quiet down and let her do most of the work. The most magnificent track, though, is theng piece. Craig plays the organ and Carchesio picks an acoustic guitar. It hints at dark clouds overhead and torrential rains ominously looking on. But you feel at peace. This is so beautiful I can barely stand it. There is a bit of a Jewelled Antler vibe here, but this trumps just about every great thing I've heard from that label. "Leaves" should be released in a much wider format. This is too amazing to go unheard by more people. This is Craig & Carchesio's masterwork, and will instantly give you the sensation that you are outside, breathing the delicious Australian air. Highly, highly recommended".- Brad Rose

Cinabri (CDR)
Would you allow your daughter to date Fages and Guthrie? Disbelievers in everything remotely resembling the regular sound of an instrument, this HispAustralian odd couple manages to subvert most usual improvisational practices in less than 28 minutes of amplified consternation, whose effects on the psyche stand halfway through a virulent galvanization (while listening, I walked around the house doing four different things without finishing one) and the sudden depressing realization that you will make no new friends if you play them this album. Pragmatically deranged, the emissions coming from Guthrie's amplified percussion are trackless ways to the discovery of your cranium's secret broken bones; those splinters you just found can't be glued together, yet they might be nicely used by Fages, who could feature them on the surface of his acoustic turntable together with his nylon threads and twanging springs, everything moved by ill fantasies overburdened with gracious cynicism. The effective interchange between these artists' personalities calls for a scribbled condensation of adequately shredded timbral errata, which in the hands of Fages and Guthrie become as important as the contextual unpredictability they ferment in. Glazy eyed, you will nail-pinch your arm to understand if it's true that sometimes bleeding for noise is healthier than crying for boredom." - Massimo Ricci for TOUCHING EXTREMES

KUUPUU (LP)
First mass produced release from Finland's Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) who is mingled in with the whole scene having played in Avarus, Tomutonto with Lau Nau, Islaja etc... This vinyl only release compiles the best tracks from a couple of years worth of recordings that orginally appeared on miniscule edition cdr's, cassette's etc... Due to a friend's cd burns (thanks jd!) we have been obsessing over these recordings for some time now. We are chuffed that they have been made available to all. So, let the hyper rant ensue: Kuupuu's music is best seen as fractured melodic and abstract, somewhat withdrawn and even 'magical' - these are broken fairytale tunes unlike anything else we can reference. Perfect late night listening. Warm and weird... this comes highly recommned to fans of the whole Finish scene and those simply looking for sweet kooky music from the modern age. Top!

PHILIP SAMARTZIS + KOZO INADA (CD)
Australian electro-acoustic composer Philip Samartzis is an increasingly vital presence in the Australian sound community. His work over the past decade and a half has offered a prophetic vision for each of his chosen formats and aesthetic approaches.
On h [ ] Samartzis is joined by minimal Japanese composer Kozo Inada, who brings with him an equally refined and austere sound sensibility. Between them, these two composers collaborate to produce a highly detailed work that juxtaposes, obscures and ultimately unites pure electronics with environmental recordings. These elements are set to work against and within one another, the results causing the listener to reconsider which sounds are emanating from the interwoven tapestry of source materials.
Celebrating the rich tradition of acousmatic sound and musique concréte, this composition provides a potent reminder of the potentials of sound as a transformative and (imagined) narrative medium.

PHILIP SAMARTZIS + LAWRENCE ENGLISH (CD)
The turntable has enjoyed a varied history in the realm of performance and experimental music. From the early phonographic works of John Cage to the spliced cut-ups of Christian Marclay in the 1980s, the device has proven to be a versatile tool for the creation and transformation of sound.
Following a joint billing at Brisbane’s Metro Arts Space in 2002, Melbourne based composer Philip Samartzis and sound artist Lawrence English shared a 30-minute performance that was to become the beginning of their on-going turntable duo. Both Samartzis (a member of the legendary Australian turntable group Gum) and English (a regular player with DJ Olive, Janek Schaefer and others) have long histories of live actions utilising turntables and together each of them brings a wealth of gestures and unique sonic qualities to the instrument.
Recorded in early 2006, this edition captures the initial studio works from these two artists and seeks to reflect on the potential of the cyclical nature of vinyl and the surface noise that envelopes the very medium itself.

DIALING IN (CD)
Dialing In is the ecstatic roaring psychedelic drone project of Seattle based sound artist Reita Piecuch. Utilising the natural acoustics of a series of reverberant spaces she weaves together super saturated soundscapes by recording in one environment, playing back in another, and then re-recording this recording playing back in yet another environment (etc..).
On 'Cows in Lye' the original sound sources range from loops of field recordings from a trip to India, piano, and the shifting drones of a "Shruti Box" (electronic Tamboura). One track also features a long stream of consciousness vocal performance from avant-crooner 'Herb Diamante'..!
After a trek with recording gear through the caves, cathedrals and bunkers of Seattle these ingredients are transformed into huge and sublimely distorted quasi-melodic dreamscapes. The album lifts off with an ecstatic roar and the intensity doesn't let up until one is released exultant in the green flash of a setting sun...

MRTYU! is Antony Milton of the PseudoArcana label, NETHER DAWN, a BLACK BONED ANGEL member, and a proflific solo artist with releases on LAST VISIBLE DOG, JEWELLED ANTLER, CELEBRATE PSI, etc... The sound is a mix of back woods New Zealand and modern urban decay. When the deep bass detonations lash out on “Rites of Death in Body Temple” you’re not quite sure whether it’s the sound of an ancient Aboriginal ritual or the menacing 808 war march of a midnight low-rider with its lights low and sawed-offs strapped. Harsh noise, Industrial Sludge & Narco-Metal meeting at the crossing of the Styx.

This album was recorded 6 years ago on 4-track and differs from Miltons many other solo projects. It's a collection of short songs with insistent violin orbiting stark acoustic guitars. ROBERT CURGENVEN (CD)
After some years working and making field recordings in remote Northern and Central Australia, a year in Germany, from late July 2004 to July 2005, initiated a return to the piano for Robert Curgenven. Robert’s approach to piano found form in moments of sustain, release and confluent tensions, sans attack, and structure in the fundaments of his clear and personal field recordings. Unprocessed, spacious and minimal, yet full and evocative: atemporal, spaces juxtapose resonances within smaller man-made architecture; overtones within a grand piano merge and move with the harmonics of landscapes’ topologies.

CHRIS CORSANO PAUL FLAHERTY (LP)
"It's not a church anymore, it's an ex church, it's used now for cultural purposes, noot for praying and religious madness anymore." those are the exact words some random anxious pedestrian yelled at Chris Corsano and Paul Flaherty, trying to stop them from putting the St John Renaissance Theater in Louisville, Kentucky on fire. Paul Flaherty used his long grey beard to start the fire and blew as high as he could with a rusted tenor and alto saxophone, the flames went high, but not hight enough for Chris Corsano aka the last drummer on earth! Chris throws oil and lighter fluid on there to spice up the barbeque a bit. This is a beautiful live recording by these two amazing free jazz musicians from Massachussets/USA. It sounds a bit different than their other recordings as it is indeed recorded in a church. It has a thick/full natural reverb on it which gets fully adopted in their music!!! THis record is packed in a black on gold drawing by Dennis Tyfus. Limited to 400 pieces.

EDMOND DE DEYSTER (LP)
"I was blown away when I got access to the extremely big archive of this Belgian analog synth king, a ton of reel tapes were left behind, a bunch of them not mentioning and information, a bunch of them not mentioning a vague date. Edmond De Deyster was a rather shy nihilist, who didn’t even tell his own family he was making music until the late eighties. He never released anything because he thought no one was interested in his psychedelic synth sounds. Sadly he died in 1999, the last 6 years of his life he didn’t record any music anymore. This is a first selection of his archive, taken from 2 reel tapes mentioning 1975, no other info. I hope it’s the earliest recordings he did, but I am not sure, as it’s possible that the reels that don’t mention anything were recorded at an earlier date... His early stuff is comparable to the more symphonic sounding synthesizer waves and tones of Conrad Schnitzler for example. Beautiful dark synth explosives, blurry and squirky layered sounds, I wish this was really and endless record spinning all day long while I’m "working"!" - Dennis Tyfus. Limited to 400 copies, packaged in a sleeve featuring a blown up photograph of Edmond De Dyester with family.

LLOYD BARRET (CD)
For well over a decade, Australia's Lloyd Barrett has been issuing all manner of intricate sound works – from diligent examinations of postconcréte sound and abstracted rhythmic projects to spacious ambient works.
In 2005, he committed himself to create Mise en Scene, a work drawing on the concepts of filmic sound and exploring the possibilities of philosophies suggested by authors and theorists such as Michel Chion.
The resulting album heralds a bold statement of intent from Barrett. Deeply evocative, maintaining moments of extreme intimacy and vast remoteness, this record is characterised by highly realised imagined sonic language. It speaks to the notions of acousmatic composition and delivers a document rich with decomposed found sound, unfamiliar texture and instrumental passages reflective of electroacoustic methodology.
"There is no auditory container for sounds... music communicates with all times and all spaces of a film, even as it leaves them to their separate and distinct existences"
(Michel Chion: 1990).

A genuine conversation piece, and a sure-fire seller to fans of recorded spoken word/comedy albums, hipsters looking to liven up a party, and of course, to those troubled souls who are sincerely seeking a unique and relatively pain-free technique with which to leave this disappointing world. BLACK DICE (BOOK)
"Music enthusiasts may consider Gore, the first book from Black Dice -- an extension of their highly visual melange of sound, performance, and art -- a fifth album, but it's something else entirely. The band grew out of the infamous Providence art and noise scene in the late 1990s, and has since drawn acclaim in New York and worldwide. Their longtime friend, photographer Jason Frank Rothenberg, has documented their work for some time. His images, often reworked and collaged by the band to illustrate their tastes and sensibilities, form the foundation of the book. In collaborating on Gore, the band's creative process parallel its musical one, each member making use of different skills in individual contributions that inform and build on one another. The resulting mix of found images, photographs, collages, and altered documentation explores the full integration of their creative processes and offers a glimpse into daily life in the genesis of their sonic persona."

CD Reissue of the first Alvarius B record. 32 instrumental acoustic guitar excursions into a realm of weird Lo-Fi rustic beauty that sketch retro-portraits of several folk guitar styles, some which may never have existed before. This record is a folk drifter classic and is now available again for the first time in a decade. Originally released as 1000 copies (vinyl only) in 1994 on Abduction. This installment promises to be the pivoting axis in the seven volume set, with 75% rare tracks and music never before heard. In the previous three anthologies, Sub Rosa outlined the historical sites at the advent of concrete and electronic music: Pierre Schaeffer's workshop studio (Vol. 1), the Princeton Electronic Music Center in Columbia, New York (Vol. 2), and the WDR Studio in Cologne (Vol. 3). After the pioneering work of these formative studios, their was a quick worldwide development of similar-intent facilities, popping up throughout Europe and America, but also in Brazil, Mexico and Japan -- countries where there was a will to create music that was radically new. This compilation features a classic cadre of artists from all over the globe, who are true cultural instigators in the field of electronic sound experimentation. Including new creations from China, Brazil, Norway and Hungary, as well as some classic and unpublished material from legendary composers such as Ligeti and Lucier and very rare documents from Robert Wyatt and François Bayle. Like the previous three volumes, this fourth installment is an absolute must for anyone interested in the roots and history of electronic music. The 2CD comes in a deluxe digipack with an informative 40-page booklet. Featuring: Steve Reich, Gyorgy Ligeti, William Burroughs, Alvin Lucier, Olivier Messiaen, Vibracathedral Orchestra, François Bayle, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, James Whitehead, Loop Orchestra, Halim el-Balh, Jean-Claude Risset, Beatriz Ferreyra, Maja Ratkje, Laurie Spiegel 6, Stephen Vitiello, Erik M, Wang Changcun, Chlorgeschlecht, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Milan Knizak, Rallizes Denudes, Andy Hawkins, John Watermann and Jean-Marc Vivenza.

PHI TA KHON (DVD)
Masks and outfits made of coconut husks, rice steamers, shredded rags and clanging bells transform participants of Thailand’s PHI TA KHON festival into ghosts, devils, demons, and spirits unleashed for a bacchanal. Outrageous wooden phalluses and plenty of rice whiskey heighten licentious behavior as MO LAM--Thai country groove music--blasts from makeshift bands in the back of pickup trucks…
Described as ‘The Mardi Gras from Hell’ and ‘Thai Halloween" PHI TA KHON is a ghost festival that takes place every year in the Isan province of Northern Thailand. Meaning 'ghosts with human eyes' or ‘ghosts follow people’, Phi Ta Khon features magnificent costumes, ornate masks, decorative phallic icons, strange ceremonies, drinking, dancing, and endless addictive Mo Lam music in higher doses than most souls can process. A mind-blowing and obscure tradition hidden within the Indochine peninsula.
Filmed on location by Robert Millis and Richard Bishop in June 2004, Phi Ta Khon: Ghosts of Isan, is shot from the perspective of a participant, ensuring an intense and immersive experience for the viewer.
The DVD includes an 8-page insert with extensive liner notes and full color images and a short bonus film of Thai spirit house details (spirit houses are everywhere in Thailand and are said to be the abodes of departed loved ones, relatives and guardian spirits).
Robert Millis is a member of Climax Golden Twins and also created the ‘Harmika Yab Yum: Folk Sounds of Nepal’ CD for Sublime Frequencies in 2005. (A Film by Robert Millis/Color/75 minutes/All-region DVD)

THIS HEAT (6CD)
Re-stocked: The complete official lifetime releases of This Heat now available as a Gourmet box set. Long out of print and fetching huge prices on ebay, the entire THIS HEAT catalogue is now available in one neat package which includes the following: THIS HEAT: The debut cd which still sounds incredibly contemporary today as it did when it was released more than 30 years ago. A mixture of re-constructed improv, studio manipulation and industrial funk, the follow up full length DECEIT which explores the "song" format more along with continuing investigations into magnetic tape as an instrument, songs developed from improvisations and sharp as silver interplay. Also included is HEALTH AND EFFICIENCY, whereby our enthusiastic musicians create a classic positive pop (?) song as a reaction to the oh so nihilistic fashion of their contemporaries back in the day. MADE AVAILABLE features the 2 peel sessions they recorded illuminating their use of backing tapes and manipulation within a live context. REPEAT eshews the songs for more focussed studio manipulation at once referencing Studio One, indonesian gamelan and post punk! And finally a never before released LIVE CD! All cd's have been Re-mastered and re-packaged, with a substantial (48pp) book of interviews, recollections, information, documents and photographs (including a track by track breakdown, how each song was developed and recorded - along with insight into THIS HEAT's creative process there are some pretty funny antecdotes throughout this booklet). All comes in a sharp sturdy box. Needless to say this number comes HIGHLY RECOMENDED for anyone interested in Post punk, pre-industrial, studio techniques, post rock (25 years before said term was phrased) etc....

JAKOB OLAUSSON (LP)
If Skip Spence were somehow, instead of finding his white-frocked self stuck in the rat-infested hole that was Bellvue, transplanted to the pine forests north of Malmo, Sweden, in a sonic nest of gimbri, bells, shakers and clothed in Tibetan silk, one would come slightly closer to the reality of Jakob Olausson’s migratory whims. To be sure, that foggy and only slightly inland empire of synapse-twisters like Ben Chasny offers a step on the trodden trail, but this isn’t the same road we’ve traveled before. Olausson’s huge ears protect him from the cold and keep the sun from turning his face to a series of desert crags, as his compositions slowly fade down the walls of four-track bedroom artistry into atemporal suites that shrink huge expanses and are a bellows to the microcosmic. Enter the Moonlight Farm.

PHILIP SAMARTZIS (CD)
Dr Phil's 2nd solo release on his own imprint Microsonics. 2 works are presented on this disc: "Absence and Presence" and "Unheard Spaces".
Absence and Presence (2006) 25:40
Was originally written for five musicians and four loudspeakers positioned throughout the site of performance in order to explore the traction between amplified and acoustic space. The piece written for these musicians relies on inderterminate stratagies resulting in a pool of sound whereby the composed, the improvised, the amplified and the acoustic all blur into a sonic mass. The players on this piece are: Sean Baxter (drums), David Brown (guitar), Anthea Caddy (cello), Philip Samartzis (field recordings and electronics) and Thembi Soddell (field recordings and sampler). The final piece was then edited by Philip Samartzis and handed over to Michael Vorfeld to add some final layers of sound. The end result is a rich study in sonic expression: a dynamic range of styles/sounds (i can't think of another cd where church bells, creaking cello, drums and sine waves all share the sonic spectrum) and all fit together as a unique whole. A large progression from Dr Phil's explorations thus far.
Unheard Spaces (2006) 41:40
"Unheard Spaces comprises field recordings of Venice conducted over a three-week period in March 2000. The focus of the composition is on the way sound permeates Venice to highlight the specific acoustics that characterize the aural dimension of this labyrinthine city. As one of the most recognizable cities in the world, and the subject of countless artistic works, I was interested to know whether it was possible to portray Venice in new and innovative ways by focusing exclusively on its sonic character. Inspired by Luc Ferrari’s Presque Rien (1995/France), as well as Luchino Visconti’s Death in Venice (1971/Italy/France), Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1973/UK/Italy) and Paul Schrader’s The Comfort of Strangers (1991/Italy/UK/USA), Unheard Spaces uses narrative to locate the listener within a set of complex sonic interactions resounding within the myriad of passageways, piazzas and canals that constitute the lugubrious city. This CD contains a stereo mix down derived from the eight-channel surround mix". - p.samartzis

GREG MALCOM (CD)
Recorded live, without the cumbersome weight of newfangled techniques such as 'overdubs' (gee-whiz!) which may seem a little commonplace for you hip-to-be-square cats until you realise that the good Mr Malcolm plays two guitars and percussion with his feet. His third guitar, the guitar he actually holds in his hands, has about half a million strings and a number of contact mics imbedded where the sun-don't-shine to amplify a host of springs, triangles, and other junkyard ephemera. This is a second-to-none ride through a world of sunshine, as viewed through net curtains from a darkened room in suburban New Zealand. Charming, stupifying, and profoundly accomplished. The noise of music! - c.kneale

Panegyric to the things i do not understand
MAGIK MARKERS (CD)
It'd be false to classify what Magik Markers guitarist and vocalist Elisa Ambrogio does in front of her microphone as singing. Rather, she surfs her trio's bloody-nosed, no-wave crests, spewing impressionist nonsense and snarling, sweaty asides as though her life depended on it. On the Markers' latest uncompromising deconstruction, A Panegyric To The Things I Do Not Understand, Ambrogio wrings all manner of flailing, acidic crash-and-burn carnage from her guitar as Pete Nolan bashes the stuffing out of his drums and Leah Quimby's bass burps unpredictably. Their unmelodic, chaotic moments imbue the calmer passages with creeping menace.

K SALVATORE (2LP)
"Two adepts of the sonic arts return with a morality play in four sides. Gone are the appeals to the winged serpent, the tree of life, or other past luminaries; these days they can be seen in consort with only one: ASHMADAI. It is said that Ashmadai is not to be feared. When you say to it: "In truth thou art Ashmadai," it will give you a wonderful ring. It will teach you geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and mechanics. When questioned, it answers truthfully. Released on two twelve inch 45 RPM platters - wide grooves for maximum impact to the ear." Latest from this mysterious NNCK offshoot.

En Concert à la Salle des Fêtes
QUINTET AVANT (CD)
Five leading lights of the French improvised, electronic, electroacoustic scene combine once again electronic tape, analogue synths and a united love for strange sonorities for their debut CD release. Like its predecessor, the vinyl only release 'Floppy Nails' (MEGO 059) this is an exciting display of concrete improvisation. Taken from a live session at the Musique Action Festival, and mastered at Piethopraxis in Köln. Given that this has sprung from the blank slate ofimprovisation - resting on the dexterity, patience, and the listening ability provided by the participants sees the results as all the more inspired. Interlocking, overlapping, stretching, snapping, bending, morphing and panning, along with vast dynamics: calm and restrained through to hyperactive and fierce. Even some Foie Gras geese get a look in. The best band currently active in France? Maybe... maybe.

AVARUS (CD)
49 minutes of gooey new goodness from Avarus - spread over just three tracks. In the last year, Finland's experimental underground has successfully overtaken the freak music world, and for damn good reasons. From the same tattered coven of piss drinkers who alternately refer to themselves (depending on who shows up to record) as Kemialliset Ystävät, Lau Nau, Pylon, Islaja, Es, Kiila or the Anaksimandros comes this, another Secret Eye release from the mighty Avarus - a follow-up to last year's Jättiläisrotta. These fumbling Finns conjure a smoky, shit-drunk forest of noise, folk and unsurpassable tribal improv. Features guest vocals and casio from Tara Burke (AKA Fursaxa) recorded live in Ireland.

Lead into Gold: long form works
VARIOUS (2CD)
A fanastic compilation of top artists from the spiritual, minimalist, folk, psychedelic and noise undergrounds coming together to contribute long-form pieces based on a theme of alchemical transmutation.
Includes exclusive tracks from birds of delay, son of earth, keenan lawler, the zoo wheel, the opera glove sinks in the sea, bird show + lichens, bruce russell, the gray field recordings, white/light, and of...ohv (loren chasse + christine boepple).
Style's range from delicate scrape, long form drone, free noise etc. Some of these names were completely unfamiliar to me but are now locked in due the high quality of tracks presented. A compilation often lacks direction and focus and subsequently has numerous dud tracks.... this one however is stunning in it's diversity and consistancy - solid all the way. Respect to Rebis for putting this one together with so much success.

CAMPBELL KNEALE (CD)
Imagine... a SOLO album! Some kind of loose-as-hell rumination on human tragedy of a magnitude beyond imagining. Take the everlasting, golden-superchord of Birchville Cat Motel, the growling tectonic, under-par riffage of Black Boned Angel, and the 'Burzum-o-phonic', cassette-left-on-the-dashboard fidelity disruption of Ming. A white-knuckled ride through snow and smoke and blood and fire. SHOSTAKOVICH!

Morpho - limited editon gourmet art version!
MORPHO (CD)
A unique collaboration between avant-guitarist Dave Brown and cyber-surreal pop artist David Wadelton.
Redolent of the mingled aroma of burning rubber and cheap perfume, the 12 genre-trampling slabs of dynamic audio on this CD explore diverse musical worlds including fringe-pop, exploitation and sci-fi soundtracks, free-form improvisation and classic electronica.
Fasten your seatbelts for a bumpy ride with the radio tuned to fuzz guitars, surfin' drum rhythms, mind-bending "sonic borrowings" and vintage synths.
As a special offer, a strictly limited edition of 50 is available. This includes an archival quality 30x30cm print of the cover art, signed and numbered by the artist - David Wadelton
Bonus rant from Dave Lang (lexicon devil records):
The debut CD from Morpho, a new project featuring local Renaissance Man wiz, Dave Brown and visual artist extraordinaire, David Wadelton. It's the best thing I've heard in a looong time and the fact that it was released by a good friend and contains the talent of another good friend means zip. It's a scientific fact. A fake soundtrack of sorts, it must rate as the most accessible slab of sound Brown has leant his name to since the heady, rock 'n' roll days of Dumb & the Ugly. The liner notes mention the likes of John Barry, Dennis Wilson, Goblin, Can, Neu!, Carl Stalling and Booker T. & the MGs. That's a good starting point and reference list for you. Upon hearing this, you will be shocked!
